Brookwood Community Brightens My Saturday

How many of you get to enjoy beautiful and vibrant flowers in the middle of February? Actually, if you are like me and live in the south, the opportunity is not that rare. For example, here in Texas this winter (if you call it that) we have been in the 80s most days.

The flowers are blooming and showing off. I know this past Saturday, which was a gray and gloomy day, the flowers at Brookwood Community were not intimidated by the day and were showing off in their full glory and color.

What is Brookwood Community, you might ask? It is a “God-centered educational, residential, and entrepreneurial community for adults with functional disabilities.” (www.brookwoodcommunity.org)

The citizens run a cafe, a gift shop and a nursery. They also handcraft pottery and artwork for the gift shop. In addition, the community offers rental of a chapel and the cafe for weddings and other events.

I received a giftcard  for purchases at the cafe, nursery and giftshop a while back. So, this past weekend DH and I made reservations for lunch and took a little drive out in the country.

The food and service for lunch was fantastic. But, the plants in the garden and nursery stole the show and were definitely the highlight of the trip. I purchased two Polka Dot plants and I can’t wait to get them in a pretty pot.

A polka dot plant on our cafe table. Just a bigger version of the one I purchased in the nursery.

The gift shop has a wide selection of items for sale including handmade items, clothing, home decor, bath and beauty products and gourmet food products.

It is located just outside of Brookshire, TX which is about an hour west of Houston right off I-10. If you are ever passing through or live close to Houston, it is definitely worth the jog off of the freeway. You can check out their website here to learn more.
